Story of Elmwood House
Panoramic view from a postcard of Eureka Springs taken from East Mountain Street includes Elmwood House 1886 Historic Inn.
The City of Eureka Springs was founded on July 4, 1879. As word spread of the healing waters from the town’s many springs, thousands came for the cure. Eureka Springs quickly became a boomtown. Elmwood House was built during this time, in 1883, by Ellar Elwood as a private residence. After the townsite was established by Federal Court Decree, the deed was received by T. Elwood Clark on June 15, 1885. The three-story wood trimmed brick structure was shown on a 1886 map as a boarding house and residence. The building escaped the 1888 great fire retaining both structural and historical integrity.
Throughout the years, Elmwood House Historic Inn has also been known as Elwood House, Elwood Apartments, and Elmwood House 1886. Elmwood House has been a lodging establishment since 1886. We have named our suites in honor of some of the springs that originally brought visitors to Eureka Springs. We hope you enjoy your stay and the hospitality of Elmwood House 1886 Historic Inn.
